Research Notes:
  • Jane Carpenter was born 22 March 1773 in Providence to Benajah and Sarah Taylor Carpenter. Her father Benajah Carpenter (1748-1776) died at the Battle of Long Island in 1776. Her mother Sarah Taylor Carpenter married again in 1779 to Capt. Thomas Smart of the Massachusetts regiments. After the Revolutionary War ends, Jane is in Boston, where she completes this sampler. The RIHS also has a portrait of Jane done around the same time see 1956.6.4. According to the 1824 Providence City Directory, Mrs. Sarah Smart lived at 100 Westminster, Jane most likely was living there too. In her will in 1828, she "a single person" left everything to her mother Sarah Smart and after her death to Nancy Carpenter Greene. Her mother Sarah Smart died in 1835.
