  • Candace Crawford Dorr (1815-1886) was the daughter of Lydia Allen (1782-1859) and Sullivan Dorr (1778-1858) and the sibling to Thomas Wilson Dorr (1805-1854), Allen Dorr (1808-1889), Annie Allen Dorr Ives (1810-1884) who married Moses Brown Ives, Mary Throop Dorr Ames (1811-1869) who married Judge Samuel Ames (1806-1865), Sullivan Dorr, Jr (1813-1884) and Henry Crawford Dorr (1820-1897). This portrait was painted the year Candace Crawford Dorr was engaged to Edward Carrington, Jr. They married in 1841 and had two children: Anne Ives Carrington Dwight Ames (1849-1904) and Edward L. Carrington (1852-1934). A later painting of Candace Crawford Dorr Carrington is 1962.3.377 painted around the date of their marriage 1841 and part of the Carrington Collection.
