Research Notes:
  • Joel Abbot (1793-1855) born in Westford, Massachusetts. Served heroicaly in the navy as Midshipman during the War of 1812. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1814 and given his first command of a the ship Marianna in 1818. Commander Joel Abbott was promoted to Commander in 1838, around the time of this portrait, and given command of the Boston Navy Yard. In 1843 sloop-of-war Decatur, in Commodore Perry's African Squadron, was commanded by Joel Abbott. Abbott commanded the frigate USS Macedonian during Commodore Mathew J. Perry's 1853-1854 visit to Japan as Perry's second in command.
