Title:
  • George Washington Teel
Author/Creator:
Place of Production/Origin:
Description:
  • Half length portrait of young man in dark green coat with brass buttons, white wing collar with bowtie and wavy red hair. Transcriiption from visit with Dr. David Robbins Tien on Friday, January 2023 (see also in record's file): "...George Washington Teel is mentioned in William Hunter's book "The Fan Kwae at Canton" on page 7. He apparently took command of the brig "Pocahontas" in Canton after the Captain (of Snow name) died. Teel had been the 1st office and sailed the "Pocahontas" back to New York after a 10 month voyage from China. This voyage appears to have occurred in 1823. His portrait in the RIHS collection is definitely not by Spoilum as his time in Canton was years after Spoilum stopped painting. We both noted the different style in Teel's portrait [in 2022]. It was possibly done by Lawqua or Foeiqua, who painted in Spoilum's style in the 15 years after the master's death."
