Research Notes:
  • Thomas Young's portrait work is totally unidentified. Except for several signed miniatures on ivory, no signed large portraits are recorded. The portrait of Philip Crapo (1767-1838) is attributed to Young on the basis of family history. It reveals the hand of a competent artist whose ability to capture a good likeness of Crapo was marred by flat modeling and unimaginative color. ~Frank Goodyear, 1974
