  • Married William H. Russell.
  • Mary Alice Crapo Russell (b. 1802) was the daughter of Philip and Desire Crapo. Her portrait was painted in the same year as that of her mother, also owned by the Society. Mary Alice Crapo married William H. Russell on 5 May 1823, a few months before this portrait was completed by Francis Alexander (1800-1880). Larger than his normal canvases, Alexander has handled the positioning of the figure on the canvas with more success, and has introduced a greater variety of ornament and color tones into the painting.
