  • Sarah Taylor was born in 1740 in Barnstable, Massachusetts, in 1771 she married Benajah Carpenter (1748 Rehoboth - 1779 Brooklyn, NY) in Providence, R.I. They had two children: Stephen Carpenter and Jane Carpenter (1773-1828) , the RIHS has the sampler done by her in the collection see 1956.5.4. Capt-Lieut. Benajah Carpenter was killed in the Battle of Long Island in 1776 in South Brooklyn. Sarah Taylor Carpenter married Capt. Thomas Smart in 1779 in Providence, R.I. The RIHS has a portrait of Capt. Smart in the collection see 1956.6.1. Sarah Taylor Carpenter Smart died in Providence in 1835 aged 94.
