Research Notes:
  • William H. Townsend (1802-1880) was painted in November 1818, in Canton, China. He traveled to China in 1817-1818 on the ship Lion, captained by his father Solomon Townsend. The painting is attributed to Fouqua, or a follower of Spoilum.
