  • I the subscriber do hereby solemnly engage and enlist myself, as a soldier, in the pay of the state of Rhode Island, for the preservation of the liberties of America, and the defense of the United Colonies in general, and this Colony in particular, from the day of my enlistement, for one year, unless the service shall admit of a discharge sooner, which shall be at the discretion of the General Assembly : And I hereby promise to submit myself to all the orders and regullations of the army, and faithfully to observe and obey such orders as I shall receive, from time to time, from my officers.

  • Enlistment form for the Continental Army.
  • Line of four-petal flower ornament leads text. Providence printer John Carter and Newport printer Solomon Southwick both owned the type ornament used. Text block measures 9 x 10 cm. Individual sheet size varies based on trimming. Sheets were printed presumably in 1775 as signatures in RIHS collection begin January 1776.
