Historical Note:
  • Born in County Monaghan, Ireland, May 2, 1868, he came to the United States in 1885 and worked in textile mills in Westerly, Clyde and East Greenwich R.I. He organized the first union of bleachery folders, was one of the founders of the United Textile Workers of America in 1901, and was president from 1921-1937. He was appointed State Director of Labor, 1937-1939. He conferred with President Roosevelt in 1936 in an effort to stabilize the textile industry by strengthening the textile unions in teh north and the south, and was appointed a member of the labor advisory board of the NRA (National Recovery Act) in 1934 by the Secretary of Labor. His associates include: Samuel Compers, William Green, John L. Lewis, and Daniel Tobin.

Scope and Content:
  • The papers are organized into two files and a scrapbook, and cover the years between 1919-1945. The scrapbook file predominantly consists of newspaper clippings concerning labor actions, legislation and fatures about McMahon in his official capacities. The clipping file is a collection of articles remembering the 1934 labor strike in northern R.I., as well as some miscellany. The letters recieved file consists mainly of condolences in the form of telegrams and letters.
