Historical Note:
  • William Greene (1695-1758) of Warwick was born March 16, 1695 to Samuel and Mary (Morton) Greene. He held prominent positions in the colony for much of his life. Deputy: 1727, 1732, 1736, 1738, 1740. Deputy Governor: July 1740 - May 1743. Governor: May 1743 - May 1745, May 1746 - May 1747, May 1748 - May 1755, May 1757 - Feb 22, 1758. William married Catherine the daughter of Benjamin Greene and they had 6 children, 5 of whom survived to adulthood: Benjamin (b.1724); Samuel (b.1727); William (b.1731); Margaret (b.1733) became second wife of Rufus Spencer; Chatherine (b.1735) married John Greene of Boston; Christopher (born and died in 1741). He died in office on February 22, 1758. According to a document in this collection he was scheduled to be in Hartford, CT on February 20th for the Convention of Northern Provinces and Colonies convened by the Earl of Loudoun. It is unknown if he attended the convention or if the trip contributed to his death.
